Chinatown NYC at Night | Leica Q3

I was waiting to get dinner with a friend at Joe’s Shanghai, which has always been my favorite Chinese restaurant in New York City. I had some time to kill, so I figured there was no better way to spend it than wandering through Chinatown at night with my camera.

The neighborhood comes alive after dark in a way that feels completely unique. The neon signs glow, the sidewalks stay busy, and everything moves with this constant pulse. I wanted to capture that energy, so I leaned into shutter drag and longer exposures. The movement adds a layer of life to the images, almost like the city is stretching across the frame.

Some moments were quiet, like the people sitting inside restaurants lit only by red and green signs. Other moments were full of motion as crowds drifted through the streets and light streaks carved their way across the scene. Chinatown has this mix of chaos and calm that feels impossible to explain, but the long exposures get close.

Walking around with the Leica Q3 gave me time to take in the textures, the colors, and the little details I usually miss when I am rushing to dinner. It reminded me why I love photographing this city. Even when I am just filling the time between plans, New York finds a way to show me something worth remembering.
